BALF, NSW, Oct. 4 (UPI) --The Federal Court has ordered that Australia's online pharmacy Viagra and its generic equivalents should be banned.
The Federal Court has ordered the sale of counterfeit versions of Viagra and its generic equivalents to the government's online pharmacy, and that the latter be banned from operating in Australia.
Viagra and its generic equivalents were found in a large box of counterfeit versions of Viagra at the New South Wales Drug Enforcement Agency's (NSWDEA) New South Wales Centre for the Protection of Patients' Health. The pills were found to contain undisclosed chemical compounds, the agency reported in a notice.
The drug was also found in the seized packaging and was being sold online. The pills were sold to customers from New South Wales. The products were sold at prices ranging from $5 to $30.
"Viagra is an approved treatment for erectile dysfunction," NSW Health Director of Public Safety James Kelly said in a statement. "However, it is important to note that the use of Viagra and its generic equivalents poses significant risks and the availability of counterfeit versions is prohibited in New South Wales."
Viagra, the brand name for sildenafil, was the first drug for erectile dysfunction approved by the FDA in Australia. Pfizer Inc. is the owner of the patent. Australian Patent Review and Technology Agency, an Australian government agency, has received approval from the Federal Government for sildenafil citrate for erectile dysfunction.
"We urge the government to take steps to ensure that this is a safe and appropriate drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction," said NSW Health Commissioner Charles Stie, in a statement.
